What are sunrooms for?

You’re in the right place to ignite your imagination and begin your creative journey. This guide is designed to spark your creativity and help you to discover the endless possibilities a sunroom or screened patio can offer.

Indoor – outdoor lifestyle

Sunrooms are the bridges that connect the inner sanctuaries of our homes with the beauty of the outdoors. They are a space where the line between inside and outside blurs. This Mid Coast Patio Glass Enclosure is the perfect example of a space that allows you to enjoy the best of your backyard with all the creature comforts of home.

Entertainment

Sunrooms provide the ideal space to take in the view. Take this Warriewood Glass Enclosure for instance – designed for unforgettable events and cosy chats beneath the sky.

Spanline Sydney converted a balcony into a sleek sunroom, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor areas. They collaborated with the body corporate, enhancing the apartment’s space while keeping ample balcony room.

With top-quality Spanline materials and coordinated colours, the transition from the main apartment to the extension is flawless. Spanlites® allow more natural light into the room and Climatek® will ensure maximum comfort all year round.

Extra living space

This Canberra Glass Enclosure, is the perfect way to live outdoors all year round. Using a combination of glass and screen in your sunroom design is a savvy way to expand and enhance your home.

In this Canberra residence, the gable roof amplifies the sense of space without weather or insect disruptions. Sunrooms become ideal venues for family meals or intimate dinners.

The beauty of a sunroom is its versatility. Why not convert your sunroom to an extra bedroom? Imagine waking up with the morning sun casting gentle hues across the room. The right glass doors, windows, walling, and climate-controlled features can transform a sunroom into a serene bedroom sanctuary.

Bringing the outdoors in!

With ample sunlight pouring in, a sunroom can be the ideal nurturing ground for your green friends:

  • Sunrooms capture ample sunlight, perfect for light-loving plants.
  • They offer protection from harsh weather conditions.
  • Easier temperature regulation than traditional greenhouses.
  • Allows year-round cultivation, expanding plant choices.
  • Enhances home aesthetics with a green, inviting space.
  • Merges the comfort of indoors with the beauty of nature.

Temperature regulation

This Enclosed Glass Room in Orange, NSW uses Spanline’s Ezi Struct® climate-controlled insulated roof panels, which ensure a comfortable temperature regardless of the season. Constructed with a dual layer of Colorweld® steel, they provide strong resistance against the elements. The solid polystyrene core in these panels dramatically reduces rain and hail noise, ensuring your relaxation remains uninterrupted.

Sunroom ideas to connect your sunroom with the outdoors?

A well-designed sunroom can beautifully bridge your indoor living space with the natural world outside. Here’s how to maximise this outdoor connection:

Large windows and glass doors

Utilise expansive windows and glass doors to offer unobstructed views of the outdoors, fostering a seamless blend with nature. This screened enclosure has bifold doors that opens the entire apartment to the elements.

Natural elements

Incorporate natural materials like wood or stone, and add indoor plants to echo the outdoor environment within your sunroom.

Transition spaces

Design transition areas like patios or decks adjoining the sunroom, enhancing the flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. This wonderful entertainer patio in Nambucca Heads is a good example of how opening your home to your outdoors creates so much space.

By thoughtfully integrating these elements, your sunroom becomes a harmonious extension of the outdoors, enriching your home with nature’s tranquility.

How To Add A Sunroom?

The process involves:

  • evaluating the area
  • designing the sunroom to fit into the existing style of your home
  • selecting the right materials

What are the key design elements to consider for your sunroom ideas?

When planning your sunroom, certain design elements are crucial to creating a space that’s both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Here’s a concise guide to the key design elements you should consider:

Maximising natural light

  • Importance of Light: A sunroom’s essence lies in its ability to harness natural light. Consider large windows or skylights, like Spanline’s Spanlites®, to flood the space with sunlight. This Canberra screened enclosure uses Spanlites® to bring more light into their outdoor space.
  • Direction and Sun Exposure: The orientation of your sunroom affects how much light it receives. North-facing rooms get steady light, while east or west-facing rooms receive morning or afternoon sun.

Comfortable and stylish furnishings

  • Weather-Resistant Furniture: Choose furnishings that can withstand sunlight exposure and varying temperatures.
  • Functional Layout: Arrange furniture to encourage relaxation and conversation. Consider the flow of movement and the room’s primary purpose, be it dining or lounging.

Flooring choices

  • Material Selection: Options like tile, hardwood, or composite flooring offer durability and ease of maintenance. Ensure the flooring complements both the interior and exterior aesthetics.
  • Comfort Underfoot: In colder climates, consider adding rugs or underfloor heating for extra warmth.

Balancing indoor and outdoor elements

  • Seamless Integration: Aim for a design that harmoniously blends your home’s interior with the exterior environment. Use similar color schemes and materials for a cohesive look.
  • Bringing the Outdoors In: Incorporate elements like potted plants or a small indoor fountain to create an outdoor feel.

Personalisation

  • Reflect Your Style: Personalise the space with décor items that reflect your tastes and interests. Art pieces, cushions, or unique light fixtures can add character.
  • Versatility: Design the sunroom to be adaptable. It could serve as a tranquil reading nook or a lively entertainment area.

How can you ensure safety and security in your sunroom design?

Safety and security are paramount when designing a sunroom, especially if it’s a space frequented by children, pets, or used for relaxation and entertainment. Here are essential safety and security elements to consider:

Child and pet safety features

  • Shatterproof Glass: Utilise shatterproof or tempered glass in windows and doors to prevent accidents.
  • Secure Locks and Latches: Install high-quality locks and latches that are out of reach for children but easily accessible to adults.
  • Non-slip Flooring: Choose flooring materials that minimise the risk of slips and falls, especially in areas prone to moisture.

Privacy measures

  • Tinted Glass or Adjustable Blinds: Use tinted glass for a balance of natural light and privacy, or install adjustable blinds for flexible privacy control.
  • Strategic Planting: Consider landscaping elements like tall bushes or trees outside the sunroom for additional privacy.

This project has carefully designed with elements that bring privacy to the occupants at the touch of a button. The combination of louvered windows and automatically retractable flyscreens provides the perfect balance between ventilation and insect protection.

Durable and robust materials

  • Weather-Resistant Construction: Ensure the sunroom is built with materials that can withstand local weather conditions, such as heavy rain, strong winds, or extreme temperatures.
  • Strong Structures: Quality beams and supports provide added strength, particularly important in areas prone to severe weather.

Fire safety

  • Smoke Detectors: Install smoke detectors in the sunroom, especially if it’s used for dining or features electrical appliances.
  • Fire-Resistant Materials: Use fire-resistant materials in furnishings and decorations wherever possible.

Accessibility

  • Accessible Design: If the sunroom will be used by individuals with mobility challenges, incorporate accessibility features such as wide doorways, ramps, and handrails.

Alarm systems and lighting

  • Security Systems: Integrate the sunroom into your home’s security system with sensors and cameras.
  • Adequate Lighting: Ensure the sunroom is well-lit, both internally and externally, to give maximum usability and safety whatever the time of day or night.

By addressing these safety and security aspects, you can create a sunroom that is not only a beautiful addition to your home but also a safe and secure environment for everyone to enjoy.

Thanks Spanline ACT for making our "vision" from 6 years ago into a reality! My garden studio/sunroom was completed by Spanline recently in June 2026 after initial contact in January 2026. It took us awhile to get our plans into place because we were disappointed with other companies for not being helpful and we also lack the expert knowledge. Overall: Spanline made everything easy for us from start to finish. Everyone we encountered with Spanline are wonderful and have great customer service skills! We would like to acknowledge everyone involved in the project: Peter - was our "go-to" from start to finish. Peter showed us the showroom, did the visits, the planning, approvals and the blueprint. Peter goes above and beyond by being approachable/contactable if we have concerns by connecting us with the appropriate persons for the job. Peter explains technicalities in simpler terms which is extremely helpful for us being ESL and having no industry knowledge. Thanks for making everything easy for us Peter! Bede - did all the transport of the materials and rubbish, everything was handled with care. Bede just like the other Spanline guys is approachable and friendly. Sebastian - the project manager or the expert problem solver, there were issues but Sebastian always have a solution for everything. Thank you for being attentive to our questions and concerns. Janno - did most of the construction of the project, Janno has remarkable and professional handiwork. Janno listens to our concerns and questions. Janno is respectful by always checking with us first before doing the installations e.g location of windows or doors. There had been leaks in our sunroom, Janno has been coming over to assess and repair until we are leak-free. Aside from being highly competent and professional at the job, Janno is warm and friendly to our neighbors, our family and pets while working on-site. Thanks Janno! Claudia - thanks for the calls and for updating with what is happening with the projects. We will miss your warm and friendly voice!

We recently had an opening roof and verandah extension done by Spanline and are very happy with the result. We have a Solar passive house and wanted an addition which was in keeping with our needs. Getting the winter sun into our house is very important to us and Spanline were very respectful of our needs. There were a few hiccups along the way during the build but Spanline were always quick to resolve any issues that came up. We cannot praise Dean our tradie onsite highly enough. He was always very professional and considerate of our needs. Thank you Spanline team.

Jamie gave great advice in suggesting that I could have new Insulated Roof Panels installed to the existing posts as they were sturdy, and it would save me money. The new panels look so good and will be much cooler in summer months, and also much quieter when it pours raining. Aaron was fantastic with the installation, from arrival to completion he was courteous. He cleaned up and removed rubbish after each stage of the work. Aaron is a very experienced builder. I am extremely happy with the finished roofing and Spanline was easy to communicate with, from the quoting process with Jamie to completion of the installation.

A big thank you to Nick, Frank, Jeff and the team at Spanline Illawarra. We had a room built onto the back of our house that has doubled our living area and we couldn’t be happier with the end result. It would be fair to say they exceeded our expectations. Frank came out and listened to what we wanted and with his experience in the industry provided suggestions on further improvements and design. Frank took care of all the approvals and this gave us pieces of mind. Nick came back to us with additional options and we are so glad we incorporated these. Nick kept us in the loop while the build was underway the communication was great. The build was completed in a very short timeframe, nothing was too much trouble and our home was kept clean and tidy. We have no hesitation recommending these guys we are so happy we used Spanline Illawarra.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why build a sunroom that reflects the Australian landscape?

A sun room offers homeowners the opportunity to engage with this landscape daily. The view from your sun room can showcase the ever-changing local flora and fauna, vivid sunsets, and seasonal transitions. It’s more than just a space; it’s a living canvas, constantly transformed by nature’s touch.

How can you adapt a sunroom for various functions and uses within a home?

The versatility of a sunroom is one of their standout attributes. For a growing family, it can transition from a playroom to a study and then a leisure space, all within the same framework. It’s a canvas that reflects evolving hobbies and interests. From a botanical haven one year to an art studio the next.

This adaptability ensures that the space remains relevant and utilised, making it a continually evolving part of the home.

In what ways does modern technology amplify the sunroom experience?

Modern technological innovations have significantly elevated the traditional concept of a sun room. Utilising solar-optimised glass, sun rooms more efficiently retain heat in winter and deflect excessive warmth in summer. Advanced systems can now even adjust blinds based on sunlight intensity, seamlessly merging the beauty of nature with indoor comfort. This union of the outdoors and indoors ensures both relaxation and practicality.

Why is a sunroom seen as a promising investment for homeowners?

From a real estate perspective, sun rooms generally enhance the usable square footage of a property. But their true value goes beyond just space. Sun rooms present a desirable lifestyle to potential buyers.

This allure, combined with the advantage of additional space, often enhances the appeal of homes equipped with sun rooms. It’s an investment in quality of life today and potential financial returns tomorrow.
